Bloomington Kennedy benefited from quick strikes in the first and second periods and skated to a 5-1 win over Marshall Wednesday in the first day of competition in the boys' Open division of the Schwan Cup played in Blaine.
Michael McCullen gave the Bloomington Kennedy Eagles (5-4 overall) a 1-0 lead just 30 seconds into the game when he found the back of the net. Marshall (5-4) tied the score midway through the period when Beau Mikel put home an assist from Quinn Horvath and the teams went into the opening intermission knotted at 1.
Again, the Eagles scored in less than a minute to start a period when Brad Hinrichs put in an unassisted goal just 38 seconds into the second period. Not even a minute later, Grant Skophammer added a third Bloomington Kennedy goal on an assist from Hinrichs.
Sam Schmitz tacked on a fourth goal for the Eagles when he scored at the 10:34 mark of the second period, and Tait Carlson gave Bloomington Kennedy the 5-1 win with a goal seven minutes into the third.
