Warrior women hit 10 3s in win over Mustangs

January 5, 2013
Marshall Independent

Becca Friestleben and Katie Wolff combined to connect for 10 3-pointers as the Winona State women's basketball team shot its way past Southwest Minnesota State for a 72-53 victory Friday in Winona in the first game back from holiday break for both teams.

Friestleben hit six 3-pointers and scored a team a game-high 22 points, while Wolff knocked down four 3s and scored 18 points to help the Warriors (10-3 overall, 4-2 Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference) create separation and pull away from the Mustangs (1-10, 0-6).

SMSU head coach Allison Kruger said her team just failed to defend the perimeter in the second half.

"We knew that's how they'd been playing recently and we didn't do a good job of getting out on their shooters in the second half," Kruger said. "They made some tough shots, but we also gave them too many easy looks.

"Probably in the first seven or so minutes in the second half they hit a couple of 3s on us, and when you're hitting 3s things can get out of hand pretty quickly."

The Warriors held a 30-23 lead at halftime and extended their lead to 20 within the first seven minutes of the second half behind four 3-pointers.

While Winona State was hot from the perimeter, the Mustangs struggled to get much to fall. Forward Alison Nagel hit seven shots and scored a team-high 18 points, but she was the only starter to score more than five for the Mustangs.

"Alison had a good game, took good shots," Kruger said. "We challenged her not to fade away and to take it at defenders, and she did that.

"The rest of the starters, we need them to step up and help us out more offensively."

Hannah Beeler came off the bench for SMSU and scored nine points on three 3-pointers.

SMSU is back in action today, facing another team that's looking for its first conference win in Upper Iowa.
