The Marshall/Lakeview coaching staff emphasized the importance of Tuesday's dual with Quad County and the Tiger wrestlers took their words to heart. The Tigers got some big wins early and relied on the strength of their upper weights later on to pull out a 39-31 win in Granite Falls.
"They're a team that's new to our section, so this was a big dual for us seeding-wise," Marshall head coach Justin Bouwman said. "They had beaten a lot of teams in the North already. Their only loss was to (Dawson-Boyd/Lac qui Parle Valley) by two points, so we were telling our guys coming in that this one was big."
The Tigers won two of the first three matches by decision, and Bouwman said the team really got rolling after Matt Facile's match at 126 pounds. Facile earned a pin on Quad County's Zach Kluver in 4 minutes, 48 seconds.
"He was down the whole match, and in the third period Kluver went to take him down and Matt dumped him to his back and got the fall and that started a big chain for us."
Riley Roth got another pin for the Tigers at 132 pounds to give them an 18-4 lead. It was Roth's 75th career win. Quad County went on a run from there and pulled ahead 22-21 after Marshall forfeited the match at 160 pounds, but the Tigers got pins from Campbell Hofstetter (182 pounds), Jared Holland (195) and Austin Nath (285) to put the match away.
Bouwman said Justin Varpness, the Tigers' 220-pounder, was able to wrestle Tuesday but was held out since the team had the match in hand. Varpness is recovering from a shoulder injury and has been out since Christmas break ended.
Marshall returns to the mat Friday for a road match against Windom/Mountain Lake.
