Another wave of illness and injury swept through the Marshall gymnastics team during the week, resulting in a step back in scoring for the young Tigers. Missing four regular scorers from their lineup, the Tigers fell to the Windom/Mountain Lake Cobras 133.5-102.3 in Windom on Thursday.
Unable to compete for the Tigers were Madison Schumacher and Haley Aguirre, out with illness and injury, respectively. Schumacher has been a consistent score on the uneven bars all season, while Aguirre is a mainstay on three of the four events.
"We had to move up some people, but they really stepped up in their positions," Marshall head coach Lindsay Wolff said. "We had put Sara (Schroeder) on bars for us, and that was her first time on varsity. She really stepped it up and got us a decent score. We had to move some other people around, but the girls are starting to feel more comfortable as when these situations arise.
"If they're on varsity they know they need to step up and really do the best that they can," she said. "Hopefully we can start to get everyone back full force and get the sickness out of the gym and start scoring even higher."
Meg Ellis led the Tigers in scoring on two of the four events, while posting the second best marks in the other two. Her 5.15 on the uneven bars was second only to Natalie Rademacher's 6.7, while her 7.3 on the floor exercise was bested by Shannyn Chelsey's score of 7.575.
Ellis posted a team best score of 6.55 on the balance beam, an event where the Tigers struggled on Thursday, while Shauna Vandendriessche had the second best score for the Tigers with a 6.1. Ellis posted her highest score of the night with an 8.45 on the vault, besting Nicole Deragisch's score of 8.1.

The vault was by far the Tigers strongest event of the night, something Wolff saw coming despite the most recent string of injuries.
"We're fine tuning our vault," Wolff said. "Our vault was almost a new high for us tonight, and bars has really come along for us. I think the girls just know that we're getting the skills in our routine, we just need to start cleaning it up. And I think that the repetitions in practice are really going to help clean it up and do the stuff that we know how to do."
The Tigers (0-6 overall) return to competition on Jan. 24, when they host the Pipestone Area Arrows.
