What is a weapon? It’s the intention of the user

To the editor:

First, I'd like to give my sympathy to the families in Connecticut, but also to individuals who have lost a loved one in an unexpected tragedy. This and other situations are caused by an individual(s), not the weapon.

To ban gun ownership by private citizens is against our constitutional/2nd Amendment right.

The 2011 statistics of victims by weapons has guns at 8,583, by knives (stabbing, cutting) 1,694 followed by blunt objects, strangulation, arson etc. Now what? Do we ban everybody or confiscate knives, etc. If an individual, not a weapon is intent on harming they can and will use any method. (www.fbi.gov expanded data table homicide 2011)

I've been a MADD victim impact speaker since 1995. I speak to DWI/DUI offenders. I discuss the impact driving while impaired and the adverse effects on the family/friends of the victim/individual killed/injured in this type of accident/tragedy. A vehicle at this point becomes a weapon!

In 2011 there were approximately 75,000 alcohol-related deaths in the U.S. of these 75,000 deaths approximately 13,984 were caused by drinking/driving. So, now what? (www.MADD.org)

Where do we begin to take rights away? There are laws for all offenses in place for all offenders.

So, if the largest percentage of victims are caused by alcohol (75,000 a year) related tragedies/deaths should we place more restrictions or ban alcohol from private citizens. Oh, I believe we tried that it was called Prohibition. (Look what took place.) Offenders of the laws already on the books are tried in court and lose their rights to drive temporary/permanently and sentenced as by law. The law doesn't take away the vehicles from all citizens that own or want to purchase a vehicle and had no part in a tragedy/accident. This is why we have laws in place.

From 1911-1981 in various countries gun control was established.

1911-Turkey from 1915-1917 1.5 million Armenians unable to defend themselves were rounded up and exterminated.

1929-Soviet Union from 1929-1953 approximately 20 million dissidents were unable to defend themselves and were rounded up and exterminated.

1935-China from 1948-1952 20 million political dissidents, unable to defend themselves were rounded up and exterminated.

1938-Germany 1939-1945 13 million Jews and others unable to defend themselves were rounded up and exterminated.

1956-Cambodia from 1975-1977 one million educated people unable to defend themselves were rounded up and exterminated.

1964-Guatemala from 1964-1981 100,000 Mayan Indians unable to defend themselves were rounded up and exterminated.

1970-Uganda from 1971-1979 300,000 Christians unable to defend themselves were rounded up and exterminated.

(www.freerepublic.com) type in each country and year

Gun control was ultimately the cause of defenseless people rounded up and exterminated in the 20th Century. Because of gun control, 56 million people were exterminated. This is probably a short list of what has taken place.

Unless we the people don't wake up and see what is taking place, we will bring on our own demise as a free country and a free people and become a police state.

Police state: A country whose citizens are rigidly supervised by a national police.

Is this what we want?
