SMSU presidential search

January 25, 2013
By Ron Wood - SMSU interim president , Marshall Independent

The time is drawing near to name the new president of Southwest Minnesota State University.

After a thorough search process that began last summer, candidate interviews with the search committee and review by the MnSCU Chancellor in December we have reached a point in which the two finalist will be brought to campus to meet the students, faculty, staff and community on Wednesday, Jan. 30, and Friday, Feb 1.

Chancellor Rosenstone has selected two excellent candidates:

On Jan. 30, Dr. Ronald Rosati will be visiting the University. Dr. Rosati currently is the Provost of Southeast Missouri State University. His educational background fits nicely with the directions the institution is now moving with degrees in Agronomy and Agricultural Education.

He holds his doctorate from Iowa State University. Prior to Southeast Missouri State University, Dr. Rosati served at State University of New York Alfred State College, and Texas A&M University - Kingsville.

On Feb. 1, Dr. Connie Gores will be visiting the University. Dr. Gores is currently the Vice-President for Student Life and Development at Winona State University and served as Interim President at Winona.

Dr. Gores background also fits nicely with respect to a major strategic direction of SMSU which is to improve student life, retention and completion. She holds a doctorate from the University of Washington. Prior to serving at Winona State University, Dr. Gore was at Randolph-Macon Woman's College.

The candidate visits will be packed with conversations during the day. Time is allocated during the day for students, faculty, administration, staff and the Foundation Board.

We have set aside the 5-6:30 p.m. time period for a community reception for each candidate. The reception is on the lower floor of the Conference Center on campus.

We are hopeful that many of you will be there as we want to create an excitement for the candidates about not only our University but also the Marshall area. There will be forms available for individuals to offer opinions about the candidates which will be passed on to the Chancellor.

After the visit, each candidate will have a final interview with up to three members of the Board of Trustees and the Chancellor. The Chancellor will then recommend at a special board meeting at the end of February the candidate to be named the next president of Southwest Minnesota State University to begin on July 1, 2013. Shortly after the announcement the next president will be presented officially to the campus and community.

While the official start date is July 1, we will use the four-month period to transition to the new president. A new and exciting era at Southwest Minnesota State University will begin. We appreciate the community's great support of the university and hope you will be able to attend the open candidate receptions on campus.
