MARSHALL - The Marshall Tiger dance team is state-bound again.

After taking first place in both kick and jazz in the Section 3AA tournament Saturday in Waconia, the varsity dance team is moving onto state competition Feb. 15-16 at the Target Center in Minneapolis.

"We're very thankful, very excited," said dance team head coach Andrea Schneier. "I think our girls, they all appreciate the chance every single year. They work hard." This is Schneier's fourth year with the dance team and first year as head coach.

Pictured is the Marshall High School Tiger varsity dance team after winning first place in both jazz and kick at sectional competition Saturday in Waconia. The team earned a trip to state at the Target Center.

Dance team co-captain Hannah Enderson said the team kind of went into the sectional competition with the hope of getting into the top three. The top three teams in jazz and kick earn a spot at state.

"And we ended up winning, so that was awesome," Enderson said.

Schneier said the team definitely had some issues with illness a few weeks before going into sectionals, which has affected scores.

"(But) we got some great scores yesterday," Schneier said Sunday.

There was a little bit of an anxious feeling before competing, Enderson said, but that tension soon disappeared.

"We were all kind of nervous in the beginning," Enderson said. "But we started getting pumped up."

And when the team learned it got first place in both jazz and kick, it was a thrill, Enderson said.

"It was just super-exciting, that was our goal going into sections," Enderson said.

Schneier said the kick team scored the highest it ever has.

"There wasn't a single mistake," Schneier said about the kick team's routine. "Their kicks were high. Their facials and presentation were right on."

In jazz, Marshall topped Mound Westonka and Holy Family Catholic, which took second and third respectively. Delano and Hutchinson took second and third in kick.

"We have very talented teams in our section," Schneier said. "We knew it would be interesting to see what the final outcome was."

Schneier said the jazz team "reformated" its routine just a week before sectionals.

"They're very dedicated, hard-working," Schneier said. "They know how to buckle down." Schneier also credits the coaching staff for getting the routines where they need to be.

Earlier in the season, dance team captains said the goal for state was to break finals. Enderson said that's still the plan.

"We're going to work super-hard to get our dances clean for finals," Enderson said.
