Tiger wrestlers get 3rd at Mankato East Invite

February 4, 2013
Marshall Independent

The Marshall/Lakeview wrestling team piled up 152.5 points Saturday to take third place in the eight-team Mankato East Cougar Invite in Mankato.

The Tigers had two individual champions on the day. Campbell Hofstetter went 3-0 at 170 pounds for Marshall and picked up his 100th career win in the process.

Tiger heavyweight Austin Nath also went unbeaten on Saturday and was crowned the champion. He went 2-0, including a win over Watertown-Mayer/Mayer Lutharan's Davion Franklin in a second-period pin. Franklin is ranked seventh in Class A as a heavyweight.

"That was an exciting back-and-forth match," Marshall head coach Justin Bouwman said of Nath's victory for the title. "It was 7-6 at the end of the first period, so there were a lot of points being racked up for two heavyweights before the pin."

Nick Erbes (120 pounds) and Riley Roth (132) both earned second-place finishes for the Tigers, and Toby Semler was third at 106.

"All around, everyone was ready to wrestle and we came out right off the bat with six wins by fall in the first round and just kept the momentum going," Bouwman said. "The guys really wrestled well."

Watertown-Mayer/Mayer Lutheran won the team title with 240 points, while Maple Lake was second with 167 points.

The Tigers are off for the week and await their seeding in the Section 3AA team tournament.
