A strong defensive effort in the first half allowed the Westbrook-Walnut Grove boys' basketball team to gain a comfortable first-half lead and the Chargers cruised to a 57-41 non-conference victory over Madelia Monday in Madelia.

The Chargers held a 29-16 lead at the half.

Alex Knutson had a solid game for the Chargers (7-12 overall) with 14 points, eight rebounds and three assists. Andy Merrick chipped in 10 points and five of the team's eight steals.

Jack Bergeman led Madelia with nine points and nobody else on the team scored more than five. Of Madelia's 11 made field goals, seven were from 3-point range.

The Chargers get right back on the court tonight for a Red Rock Conference road game against Fulda.
