The Southwest Minnesota State basketball team went 1-1 in an early-morning doubleheader against the University of Mary Sunday at the Metrodome in Minneapolis, winning the first game 7-3 and falling 4-0 in Game 2.

SMSU, which split a doubleheader in the Metrodome against Upper Iowa on Thursday, is now 2-2 overall after its first week of play in the 2013 season.

In Game 1 of Sunday's doubleheader, SMSU scored the first run of the game in the second inning when Elliot Serbus drew a walked, moved to second on a balk and was knocked in on an RBI single by Jarred Carlson. The Mustangs broke out for a five-run inning in the third thanks to three extra-base hits. Brian Ness, Kyle Young and Carlson each knocked in runs by connecting on doubles in the inning.

Carlson and Ben Korger each had two hits in the game, while Carlson had three RBIs.

Travis McGlauflin made his first career appearance for the Mustangs in the game and earned the win, tossing four-plus innings. He allowed two runs on four hits with four walks, one hit batter and four strikeouts.

McGlauflin was relieved by Taylor Klingenberg, who allowed one run on two hits and a walk. Landon Gacke closed things out by throwing the final 1 2/3 innings, striking out three batters and allowing no runners on base.

SMSU's bats were held quiet in Game 2 of the doubleheader, as Mary's Kyal Williams threw six shutout innings on his way to earning the win. The Mustangs mustered only three hits in the game, collected by Jordon Kontz, Mason Schnaible and Jon Ellis.

Colton Schmit struggled early in his start for the Mustangs. He allowed three runs in the first and one in the second, giving up eight hits and two walks.

SMSU is back in the Metrodome on Feb. 27 when the Mustangs have a doubleheader against Concordia-St. Paul.
