Tiger gymnasts end season at section tourney

February 18, 2013
Marshall Independent

The Marshall and Hendricks/Russell-Tyler-Ruthton gymnastics teams closed out their season Saturday at the Section 3A championships at Jackson County Central High School in Jackson.

Host JCC won the team title with a score of 143.125 and will move on to the Class A state tournament. Martin County Area took second (133.925), Windom/Mountain Lake was third (130.675), Worthington finished fourth (130.500) and Hendricks/RTR placed fifth (129.025) in the 10-team section. Marshall was ninth with a score of 105.225.

In their first year as a varsity program, the Hendricks/RTR Grizzlies will be sending one individual to state. Freshman Hailey Teske scored an 8.450 in the uneven bars to take fourth place. The top four individuals in each event move on to state.

Teske had an all-around score of 32.650, while teammate Greta Johnson scored a 33.425.

Marshall was coming off posting its highest team score of the season, a 113.575, in its final regular season competition Feb. 7 in Marshall. The Tigers didn't reach that mark Saturday, but their head coach was still pleased with the effort.

"Coming into sections off of our high score of the season we wanted to see what score we could end our season with," Marshall head coach Lindsay Wolff said. "This was the first time at sections for some of our girls and the first time competing at that level. There were a lot of teams there and we had some nerves, but I'm proud of the way we ended the season."

Meg Ellis and Natalie Rademacher, two freshmen, had emerged as leaders during the season and Wolff said that carried into Saturday. Rademacher posted a 27.775 in the all-around, and Ellis had a 27.475.

With a team full of seventh-, eighth- and ninth-graders, Wolff said there is still plenty of time for the Tigers to grow and she expects them to come back stronger for the 2013-14 season.

"As of now, they're all planning on coming back out next year," Wolff said. "They'll need to get in the gym and lift, and a lot of them want to go to camps, so they all want to improve for next year. If we can come out next year and start with a 105, then that would be a great starting point for us."
