Ready to ride: American Legion Riders forming new chapter

March 19, 2013
By Deb Gau , Marshall Independent

MARSHALL - Local American Legion members are looking for some riders for a cause this spring.

Motorcyclists who are members of the American Legion, or affiliated groups like the Sons of the American Legion or Legion Auxiliary, are eligible to be part of a new chapter of the American Legion Riders.

"It was something we had discussed for the last year and a half or better," said Jeff Gay, commander of Legion Post 113 in Marshall. The post has started looking for charter members to form an ALR chapter.

The American Legion Riders are a group separate from the Legion, but you need to be a member of the Legion, Auxiliary, or S.A.L. to join, Gay said.

The Riders attend different events and participate in charitable work. One example is the Legion Legacy Run, a fundraising ride for the Legacy Scholarship Fund, which provides scholarships to children of U.S. military personnel killed since Sept. 11, 2001. Gay said he plans for the Marshall group to also be involved with youth education programs.

"The nice thing about the American Legion Riders is that it covers all facets of the organization," Gay said.

There are more than 100,000 ALR members around the country.

Gay said the drive to start a group of Riders got started after local Legion members were visited by members of the Montevideo chapter of the ALR in February.

The Montevideo ALR has proved to be a positive addition to its post, as well as encouraging people to join the Legion, Gay said.

Gay said at least five people are needed to charter an ALR group in Marshall. Hopefully, he said, there will be enough interest to get the Riders on the road in April. So far, there's been some interest from both Legion and S.A.L. members, he said.
