School insurance, or lack thereof

March 20, 2013
Marshall Independent

To the editor:

First, I would like to say thank you to the Marshall High School staff and teachers for all they did when my son broke his ankle. They were very accommodating.

My son broke his ankle this past January on the sidewalk in front of the high school when he slipped on some ice. I was surprised to find out that the school carries no insurance for a child who slips on ice at the school.

My husband is self-employed and if he needs to pay for and carry insurance if a customer falls and gets hurt at his place of business, I would think the school would, too.

Since insurance is so high we have a $5,000 deductible. Needless to say we're getting no help from insurance.

We've been asked by many if we're suing. We're not. But it would have been nice for some help, or at least offered. This brings up some important questions. What about the next kid who falls on the sidewalk or parking lot? What about parents or grandparents coming to sporting events? What about the kids playing on the playground?

We're fine, but the next family might not be. If you don't want to take the chance and be in our situation, call the school and ask for change.
