Tying a career high with four hits, including a home run, Brian Ness powered the Southwest Minnesota State baseball team to an 8-6 win over Augustana Saturday in the second game of a Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference doubleheader in Sioux Falls, S.D.
Augustana won the first game of the doubleheader 6-1. The two teams also played a doubleheader Friday, with the Vikings taking both games.
Ness had four of SMSU's 12 hits in the Game 2 victory. Kyle Young added three hits, including a double, and Ryan Engels had two hits, one of which was his first career home run.
SMSU (6-12-1 overall, 1-3 NSIC) needed a comeback to grab the Game 2 win. The Mustangs gave up four runs in the second inning to fall behind Augustana (14-10, 3-1 NSIC) 4-2. The Vikings scored two runs in the fifth to go ahead 6-5 before SMSU scored two runs in the sixth to go up for good.
SMSU's first two batters of the sixth inning struck out before Jordan Kontz drew a walk. He was followed by Ness, who hit his second homer of the season.
Brothers Travis and Corby McGlauflin did all the pitching for SMSU in the game. Travis McGlauflin earned the victory, tossing 5 1/3 innings and giving up six runs (all earned). He gave up six hits and two walks, and struck out three batters.

Corby McGlauflin came on in the sixth and pitched the final 3 2/3 innings. He earned the save, holding Augustana scoreless while on the mound. He gave up four hits and struck out three batters with no walks.
SMSU was stifled by Augustana pitcher Kye Winter in the first game. Winter pitched all seven innings, giving up just one run on four hits with eight strikeout and a walk.
The Mustangs' lone run came in the first inning when Engels scored on a throwing error on a failed pickoff attempts. Ness had two of SMSU's four hits in the game.
Joe Axelson got the start for SMSU and pitched two innings, giving up four runs on three hits and three walks with a pair of strikeouts. Brandan Alfson pitched the next three innings for SMSU, allowing an unearned run. He gave up a hit and a walk with two strikeouts. Eric Giddings tossed the final inning, allowing one earned run on two hits.
SMSU resumes conference action Wednesday with a doubleheader at Winona State.
