Lincoln County Board votes to purchase emergency sirens

IVANHOE?- The Lincoln County Board voted to purchase five emergency sirens for $81,000 at its regular meeting on Tuesday.

The quote was submitted by the Federal Signal firm based in Illinois, beating a $95,000 quote submitted by DanCo, which is based in Nebraska.

The sirens will be located at Norwegian Creek Park, Picnic Point, Stony Point, Hole in the Mountain Park and the city of Arco after the board takes bids on a contract to install them, according to county Emergency Manager Jeanna Sommers.

The county already has sirens in Hendricks, Ivanhoe, Lake Benton and Tyler, funded by a United States Department of Agriculture grant, Sommers said. County residents will get a chance to hear them at 1:45 p.m. and 6:45 p.m. on Thursday as part of Lincoln County's participation in Severe Weather Awareness Week.

The board voted at the recommendation of County Engineer Lee Amundson to advance Joe Wilson from Engineering Technician 1 to Engineering Technician 2 and to adopt the Lincoln-Pipestone Mutual Aid Agreement.

The agreement provides for an exchange of help and equipment in emergencies.

The board agreed to be the sponsor for a state Department of Natural Resources grant application to develop snowmobile trails in the county. County grants typically run $24,000-25,000.

The board voted to approve a 25 percent increase in the county's contribution to the Redwood Cottonwood Rivers Control Area (RCRCA). The increase amounting to $1,035 would raise Lincoln County's contribution to the nine-county joint powers agreement to $5,175 for the year 2014.

The RCRCA works to improve water quality, reduce erosion and enhance recreational opportunities within the Redwood and Cottonwood River watersheds.

Environmental Administrator Robert Olsen informed the board the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) had approved an amended request to approve a grant of $106,000 for repairs to Judicial Ditch 31, located east of Tyler and shared with Lyon County.

Lincoln County had originally been approved a grant to $66,000 in 2011 before amending the application to cover the remainder of the estimated $110,000 in repair costs.
