Team scores weren't kept during Tuesday's track and field triangular in Brookings, S.D., but that didn't prevent the Marshall Tigers coaches from realizing noticeable improvements from their teams as a whole.

Competing against host Brookings and Sioux Falls Lincoln, the Tigers were pushed by some top-level athletes and rose to the challenge.

There were multiple first-place finishes for both the Marshall boys and girls. On the boys' side, the Tigers' 4x800-meter relay team of Andrew Bell, Mike Larson, Wade DeAustin and Blaine Moran earned a first-place finish with a time of eight minutes, 46 seconds. All four boys set career bests running their leg of the race.

"They've been running a little lethargic lately and must have stepped back and rededicated their efforts, and it clearly paid off," Jacobs said.

Another highlight of the day for the Tigers was the performance of Sam Marshall, who set a personal best in each event he competed in. Marshall was second in the 400 dash (52.74 seconds), second in the 200 dash (23.2) and sixth in the 100 dash with a time of 11.28 seconds, which was a half a second faster than his previous best.

Rhett Struve gave the Tigers a win in the long jump with a leap of 19 feet, 11 inches, and Zach Drum also topped the podium in the triple jump with a distance of 39-3.25. Also picking up a win for the Tigers was senior Brock Baumgarn in the discus with a throw of 130 feet.

Jacobs said that with the weather finally cooperating, his athletes are starting to get into a groove.

"We've finally got some consistent action. Times are starting to come down for some of these guys," Jacobs said. "We went against some pretty good competition Friday in Pipestone, and then again today. That's what it takes to see these guys do well. The 4x800 team really showed the result of having good competition to run against."

Marshall girls' head coach Marie Sample said it was the same case with her squad, and Marshall's 4x800 girls' relay team also had a strong effort. The Tiger team of Madi Verschaetse, Nichole Sample, Claire Boersma and Jenna Christianson won with a time of 10:01.43.

Sophomore Sarah Buysse added wins in the 100 dash (12.74) and the 400 dash (1:10.14), and she was second in the 200 dash (26.24).

Marshall also dominated the 1,600 run, with Nichole Sample winning the race (5:39.76), Jackie Turner taking second (5:32.06) and Claire Boersma finishing third (5:33.49).

In the jumps, Sydney Griffin was second in the long jump (16-0.25) and third in the triple jump (33-10.75). Rachel Miller had her best mark of the season in the pole vault, earning a second-place finish with a vault of 7-6. Also in the field events, Celeste Werner took second in the shot put (31-4.5) and third in the discus (95-11).

"We saw a lot of personal bests in all kinds of different events," Marie Sample said. "We're so excited to be out and competing right now. We've done a lot of work indoors and our field event kids had been a little bit limited in their training, but the kids have really stepped up."

Sample entered 10 kids into this weekend's prestigious Howard Wood Relays in Sioux Falls, S.D., and said all of them were accepted into the field. She's looking forward to seeing how they handle the atmosphere and the stout competition.

Before that, the Tigers are scheduled to take part in a meet in Waconia Thursday, weather permitting.
