Eagles win SWC dual against Marshall golfers

The Windom Area Eagles won both the boys' and girls' golf duals against the Marshall Tigers at Windom Country Club on Friday. The Eagles rode Kelsey Hanefeld's low-round of 41 strokes to a 15-stroke win in the girls competition, while the Eagle boys were 14 shots better than the Tigers on the day.

Marshall girls' golf coach Nancy Blanchard said that it just wasn't Marshall's day down in Windom.

"Five of the girls had played the golf course before, so I don't think it was (inexperience with the course)," she said. "We did have to delay the starting time of the meet for a couple of girls who were taking an (Advanced Placement) exam. So we kind of rushed down there and rushed to get on the golf course, maybe that had something to do with it, I'm not sure. For whatever reason it just wasn't our day."

Jessica Blanchard carded a 7-over-par 43 to pace the Tigers to a team score of 189. Windom shot 174.

Hanna Peterson fired a 48 for Marshall, while Kirsten Webskowski and senior Ali Pogatchinik each recorded a 49. Marah Mulso put up a 52 and Laura Mitlyng rounded out the Tiger competitors with a 55.

"Jessica played probably to her average, but everybody else could have played three or four shots better than they did. That would have been a big boost," Blanchard said. "It just, collectively, happened that way where we all had not so good of days at the same time. Somedays we can get away with somebody having a bad day because there are four that played decent. Today we just didn't have that. They all know they could have played a little bit better than they did and hopefully it goes better tomorrow."
