MCC boys victorious in Red Rock Conference track meet

Behind six championship performances, including three individual wins by sprinter Jack Thony, the Murray County Central boys' track and field team laid claim to the Red Rock Conference title at the conference meet in Slayton on Thursday. MCC edged Fulda by five points, 142-137, to win the team event while Westbrook-Walnut Grove/Red Rock Central placed fourth in the boys' competition with 91 points.

On the girls' side, Southwest Minnesota Christian's 145 points were five better than Mountain Lake Area and twenty points above third-place MCC. WWG/RRC took seventh with 51 points.

Thony swept the sprints for the Rebel boys, winning the 100-meter dash in 11.22 seconds. His time of 22.75 was best in the 200, while the senior completed one lap of the track in 50.36 seconds to win the 400.

Tanner Nepp had the two best throws of the day, taking first place in both the boys' shot put at 45-feet, 7.5 inches as well as the discus with a toss of 129-08.

MCC's 4x800-meter relay team of Joey Petersen, Patrick Platt, Clayton Hartle and Jack Erickson were also named conference champions for their two-mile run in 9 minutes, 23.7 seconds.

WWG/RRC also had six champions on Thursday in the boys' meet. Jeff DeCock had three on his own, winning the high jump (6-00), long jump (20-07) and triple jump (40-01).

AJ Jongen had the top time in the mile with a time of 4:48.03, while also running a leg in the champion 4x400 team for the Chargers with DeCock, Derek Christians, and Levi Bunting.

The Chargers also won the 4x200 relay with a time of 1:39. Bunting and Christians were also on the 4x200 team, joining Tanner Pederson and Alex Knutson.

MCC's girls' team picked up three individual championships on their way to a third-place finish. Hannah Schmidt won both the 100-meter dash and the long jump with a time of 13.11 and distance of 15-02.75 respectively. Paris Thomas also won the 100-meter hurdles, running in 17.46.

Melanie Kedl and Chloe Arfsten had the only wins for WWG/RRC. Kedl won the high jump with a height of 4-08, while Arfsten cleared 8-06 to win the pole vault.
