Clearing the first hurdle

C/M/L girls win team title, Carr sets new meet record in triple jump as area athletes begin their bid for state at sub-sections in Redwood Falls

REDWOOD FALLS - Area athletes will descend on Benson for the Section 3A track meet on May 30 en masse after strong showings from five area boys' and girls' track and field teams at the 3A Sub-section 11 meet in Redwood Falls.

Of the 108 spots up for grabs on Thursday, 77 went to area teams. Canby/Minneota/Lincoln HI led the way with 29 qualifiers for the 3A finals, while Tracy-Milroy-Balton had 20. Wabasso also showed well in Redwood Falls and will send 14 individuals/relay teams to Benson on May 30, while Lakeview picked up 10 qualifiers. Russell-Tyler-Ruthton had four qualifications, three of which went to Jada Carr.

Carr took second in the 200-meter dash before soaring to victories in the long jump and triple jump. Her mark of 35-feet, 0.25 inches set a new sub-section record in the triple jump. Newt Dunblazier also qualified for the Knights, taking second in the high jump after leaping an inch shy of six feet.

Canby/Minneota/Lincoln HI’s Nathan Pavek, left, Redwood Valley’s Thane Widmer, center, and Wabasso’s TJ?Fulton compete in the boys’ 300-meter hurdles during Thursday’s 3A Sub-Section 11 track and field meet in Redwood Falls. Widmer won the event in a time of 41.63 seconds, Pavek took second and Fulton finished third.

The C/M/L girls' track team earned a sub-section championship behind seven event wins. A team score of 171 points bested TMB by 26.

Morgan Merritt led the way for the Lancers with victories in both the 100 and 300-meter hurdles. Meghan Travis won the girls' high jump, clearing 4-09, and Morgan Citterman was victorious in shot put with a hurl of 33-05.25.

The Lancers were also strong in the distance events. Amanda Grengs won the 3,200-meter run, while Natalie Dinius took top honors the 1,600. C/M/L's 4x800 relay team of Grengs, Kalli Jelen, Sydney Sisk and Leah Jessen was also victorious, running two miles in 10 minutes, 3 seconds.

All in all, it was a good day to be a Lancer.

"They pretty much ran all their best today," C/M/L head coach Beth Jessen said. "It was really a nice day. Our relays, I think three of the four made it. It was a nice balance all the way through."

On the boys' side, the Lancers fell 16 points shy of Redwood Valley for the sub-section title, scoring 154 points behind four event victories.

Two of those wins came from distance runner Nick Stoks, who breezed by the competition in both the 1,600 and 3,200.

"He's kind of had an up and down year for track," Jessen said. "He's only ran the one-mile and two-mile both in the same meet twice all year. He had a really nice night which was nice to see."

Nathan Pavek also stood out for the Lancers, leading off a winning 4x100 team and taking gold in the 110-meter hurdles. Pavek also qualified for the section finals in 300 hurdles.

Where C/M/L struggled on the boys' side was in the field events. Only John Deslauriers' second-place finish in the discus prevented the Lancers from being shut out of qualifiers off the track.

With a solid performance behind them, the task now becomes staying focused for the finals in six days. Jessen said that mimicking the schedule of the school year will be key for her teams.

"We just got out of school and I'm kind of glad that we did just get out," she said. "I know last year it was really hard, we were out so early and the kids would sleep in, then they're not focused. With school being done just yesterday it'll be more structured I think, and hopefully this next week will be."

Over half of the qualifiers for Tracy-Milroy-Balaton came from the Panthers' girls' team. Eleven individuals and teams will move on to the 3A finals for TMB, including championship relays in the 4x200 and 4x400. Kendra Nelson, Kaylee Kirk, Kelli Soupir and Kendra Ludeman completed two laps of the track in 1:52.77 for first place, though Nelson was replaced by Taylor Schmidt for the winning 4x400 team.

Tommy Nelson swept the throwing events for the Panthers with a toss of 46-09.25 in the shot put and a launch of 135-06 in the discus, helping TMB edge Lakeview for third place in the boys' competition 97-95. Brent Swenhaugen was bested by Redwood Valley's Jacob Prouty by half an inch in the triple jump.

Grant Taylor won both the 200 and 400 for the Lakers with times of 23.69 and 52.36 respectively.

TJ Fulton sprinted 100 meters in 11.43 seconds to claim Wabasso's only individual championship of the boys' competition. Mikayla Salfer had a field-best time of 1:02.92 in the 400 for the Rabbits as well.
