Heart of the Prairie Days to feature talent contest

May 30, 2013
By Samantha Downing , Marshall Independent

The city of Clarkfield is kicking off southwest Minnesota's summer celebrations with its Heart of the Prairie Days this weekend.

The festivities begin today and continue through Saturday.

"The entire Clarkfield community is excited about the upcoming weekend," Stephanie Randall said. She went on to say that "most people are anticipating the grand parade Thursday at 7 p.m. and the new event Clarkfield's Got Talent at 7 p.m. on Friday as well as the free bouncy houses that are free due to our sponsor, Prairie Grain Partners and a grant from the C.A.C. Foundation."

The grand parade has about 100 units signed up to participate.

Clarkfield's Got Talent is a new event this year to the Heart of the Prairie Days. David Werner is in charge of this project and came up with the idea when he initially volunteered to help with the Heart of the Prairie events.

Werner owns Inkspot in town and wanted to do his part to contribute in any way he could. Although this event was thrown in rather late, "the goal is to bring together the small town atmosphere of a family fun night. Anybody can do anything they want to and have fun with it," Werner said.

This is an open event, and everyone is encouraged to show off their talents to the Clarkfield community and visitors. There are prizes available for first- through third-place acts that are chosen by the crowd. Free ice cream is provided for anyone who showcases their talents. Werner wants to see the heart of the prairie come back to the rural towns of southwest Minnesota and is doing what he can to achieve that goal, including dedicating his springtime as a farmer to plan the events.

Clarkfield as a whole is preparing itself for all of the people who will be attending the Heart of the Prairie Days. Set-up is ramped all around town as the different committees pull together the last minute details of the events. Also, many families are preparing for their garage sales as this weekend is the city's citywide sale.
