Sept. 23, 1932-May 23, 2013
MARSHALL - Services for Peter Karasis, 80, of Marshall will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Stephen Lutheran Church in Marshall. Visitation is one hour prior to services at the church. Burial will take place June 3 at Fort Snelling National Cemetery in Minneapolis.
Peter peacefully died May 23, 2013, at his residence in Marshall surrounded by his family.
Peter Karasis was born Sept. 23, 1932, in Pittsburgh, Pa., to Anastias and Tasia (Ellinis) Karasis. Peter was proud of his Greek heritage. In 1953, Peter served his country in the United States Army. This is where he learned how to cook. After being honorably discharged from the Army, Peter continued to work as a cook. He enjoyed socializing with customers, whether he was bartending for a neighborhood tavern or working at his brother's grocery store. He was united in marriage to Violet Anderson Jan. 4, 1958, and together they lived in Chicago for 50 years; working hard at various restaurants before opening their own. It was Peter's hard work ethics that allowed the couple to retire early and move to a beautiful acreage in Alexandria in 1975. Peter and Violet moved back to Chicago in 1981 to be close with family; where he worked for the Marriot Hotel as a head chef. In 2002, the couple moved to Marshall. Wherever they were, they enjoyed spending time with others; especially playing cards, listening to music and watching movies. Peter always made time for kids and enjoyed it when they would come into his snack shop. Peter was an avid Minnesota Twins fan, only after giving up on the Chicago Cubs. He also enjoyed going to casinos and fishing with Violet.
Anyone who had the privilege of knowing Peter was lucky. He will be missed by his wife, Violet Karasis of Marshall; sisters, Mary Lamperis of Chicago, Ill, Helen Georgopoulos of Northbrook, Ill., Georgia (Bill) Xentaris of Morton Grove, Ill; brother, John Karasi of Forest Park, Ill; sister-in-law, Mavis Regnier of Marshall; and numerous nieces, nephews, family and friends, all of whom were special to Peter.
He is preceded in death by his parents; sisters, Chrissie Grivas, Demetra Himes; and infant brother Nicholas.
