Thirteen individuals qualified for the state track and field meet in 20 events at the Section 3A track and field championships in Benson on Thursday.

Murray County Central's Jack Thony and Westbrook-Walnut Grove/Red Rock Central's Jeff DeCock led the area with three state qualifications each.

After qualifying for state in three events a year ago, Thony won the boys' 100-, 200- and 400-meter dashes on Thursday.

Canby/Minneota/Lincoln HI’s Morgan Merritt competes in the 300-meter hurdles during the Section 3A track and field championships in Benson. Merritt advanced to state in the 100-meter hurdles, placing second with a time of 17.30 seconds.

"(My goal was) to make it to the state meet and compete there," Thony said. "Last year, I made it to state in the 100, 200 and long jump. I want to go out strong."

Thony narrowly missed qualifying for the 400 in 2012, and, although he will be competing in the event this year, said he was not satisfied with his winning time of 50.44 seconds.

"I'm not really satisfied yet. I'm looking to compete at state," he said. "It's been a fun year. I have some incredible teammates and wonderful coaches. It's been a good run."

Tanner Nepp won the shot put with a hurl of 52-02.75, while MCC teammate Tyler Scotting will be joining Nepp and Thony at state after a second-place finish in the 300-meter hurdles.

Thony finished fourth in the long jump, while DeCock and Redwood Valley's Randy Juell earned the section's state berths in the event.

DeCock won the triple jump with a leap of 43 feet, 9 inches and, despite a third place finish, also qualified for the high jump. By clearing 6-feet-3, DeCock passed the standard in the event for Class A.

Chloe Arfsten was the only Charger to qualify in the girls' meet, but took top honors in the pole vault. Arfsten set the bar at 9-02 to punch her ticket to Hamline.

Jada Carr, of Russell-Tyler-Ruthton, qualified for the state meet in two field events for the Knights.

"I took first in long jump," Carr said. "I jumped 17-8.5. That's my personal best this season. I also won the triple jump. I jumped a 36-1, which was also a personal record.

"It felt really good. Last year, my best was 35-6," Carr added. "It feels pretty good to get that."

Behind a win in the 3,200 and a second-place finish in the 1,600, Canby/Minneota/Lincoln HI senior Nick Stoks will represent the Lancers in two events at the state meet as well. Stoks won the two-mile run with a time of 10 minutes, 10.96 seconds.

Morgan Merritt was the only other Lancer to qualify for state, after C/M/L had dominated the sub-section meet. She took second in the 100-meter hurdles with a mark of 17.30.

Lac qui Parle Valley/Dawson-Boyd's Jacinta Roggenbuck was the only other multiple-event qualifier from the area, winning the 400 with a time of 26.18 and placing second in the 200. Teammate Alaysia Freetly will accompany Roggenbuck to the state meet after winning the 1,600 in 5:22.46.

Jacob Pederson gave everything he had to earn a state berth for Yellow Medicine East in the 400. His time of 51.19 edged Lakeview's Grant Taylor by just over a tenth of a second.

"I ran my best time," Pederson said. "I was really tired at the end. I was scared that Grant was going to come up. It was close. He's a good runner.

"I was so tired from the 400, that five steps in for the 200, I was already tired. I was ranked third and I got fifth place," Pederson added. "They're all good runners, though. Anybody could've won."

Trevon Cox was the only other YME athlete to advance out of the section after his toss of 143-09 took second in the discus.

The final state qualifier from the Marshall area was Tracy-Milroy-Balaton girls' high jumper Kendra Ludeman. Only an eighth grader, Ludeman cleared 5-03 while many of her competitors failed to clear the entry height eight inches lower.

"I was very excited (to win the high jump)," Ludeman said. "I was shaking the whole time I was jumping. That was my PR, so I was excited."

With the state meet set for June 7-8 at Hamline University in St. Paul, Ludeman's approach will be similar to that of her competitors.

"I just want to get in the top half and get another PR, just do the best I can," she said.
