Marshall Blue blasts Tyler

With a five-game tournament in Cold Spring looming, Marshall VFW Blue coach Chace Pollock decided not to strain any arms against Tyler on Thursday. Rather, Blue went pitcher-by-committee, using six pitchers in an 11-2 win.

Blue also blasted nine hits in the game, scoring four runs in the first inning and adding four more in the sixth. A run in the fourth and two in the seventh totaled 11.

Nate Hoeft tossed the second inning for Blue and was 2-for-4 at the plate. Conner Winkelman started and roped a double, while twin brother Noah was 2-for-3 on the day. Brent Andries was 2-for-5 and drove in three RBIs.

Rusty Swanson was credited with the win, pitching scoreless innings in both the fourth and the fifth.

Tyler scored two runs but accumulated a lone hit against the Blue bevy of arms. Levi Hurst threw six innings for Tyler, taking the loss, while Brandon Verly pitched the final inning.

Marshall improves to 2-0 on the season, but will face two quality opponents today in Cold Spring. Blue opens up the day at 2:30 p.m. against Cold Spring Gray and faces either Shakopee or St. Cloud Blue at 5 p.m.

Worthington tops Tracy 5-4

Riley Steffes stuck out seven over 4 1/3 innings of duty for Tracy VFW, but it was Worthington that picked up the win Thursday in Tracy. Steffes took the loss in the game as Tracy fell 5-4 for their first defeat of the season.

Trevor Wietzema and Oliver Wolyniec each had doubles for Worthington, which scattered eight hits over the seven inning game.

Tracy mustered just four hits, two coming off the bat of Austin Gleis. Steffes and Brady Lanoue each added singles, while Gleis pitched 2 2/3 innings of relief.

Luke Drooger picked up the win for Worthington, stifling the Tracy bats in relief of starter Carson Hagen.

Tracy (2-1 overall) returns to action today against Humboldt (Iowa) as part of a tournament in Luverne.
