Marshall Blue goes 1-1 to kick off tournament in Cold Spring
The Marshall Blue VFW baseball team opened a three-day tournament in Cold Spring going 1-1 Friday. Blue defeated Cold Spring Gray 4-3 in 10 innings in its opener, then ended the day with a 3-2 loss to Shakopee.
Marshall was locked into a pitchers' duel with Cold Spring in the opener, as each team struggled to score. Marshall managed to put up a run in the bottom of the seventh to force extra innings. Then in the 10th inning it got a key two-out hit up the middle by Brent Andries to score Conner Winkelman, who led off the inning with a walk.
Winkelman threw the first 3 1/3 innings before being relieved by Derek Rasmussen, who pitched through the ninth. Nate Hoeft came on in the 10th and earned the win. The three held Cold Spring to six hits.
Hoeft ended the game 3-for-5, Andries went 2-for-5 and Dylan Criquet-Danielson was 2-for-3 with a double.
A sloppy effort in the field cost Marshall in its next game against Shakopee. Blue committed five errors in the game, and Shakopee scored three unearned runs in the fifth inning to get the win. Hoeft pitched all seven innings for Blue and gave up just four hits. He also went 2-for-3 at the plate.
