Granite Falls’ Western Fest rodeo celebrates 25 years

June 19, 2013
By Samantha Downing , Marshall Independent

This year will be the 25th anniversary of the Western Fest Stampede Rodeo.

The first rodeo starts on Thursday, with the final one on Saturday night. There is one rodeo each night at 7:30 p.m. with other events throughout Granite Falls starting today.

"You can expect nonstop action from the second the rodeo starts," said John Richter, chairman of the Western Fest Stampede Rodeo.

"There will be 358 contestants from the Granite Falls area, 30 states, Canada and other foreign countries," Richter said. There was only a 24-hour window for people to sign up to be a part of the 25th annual Stampede Rodeo.

"Our comedy act this year, John Harrison from Oklahoma, will be there every night. He was the PRCA Comedy Act of the Year in 2012. Even though he joined us last year, and we try to switch it up, we wanted him again for our 25th celebration because he was such a hit," Richter said.

Bareback riding, saddle bronc riding, tie-down roping, steer wrestling, bull riding, team roping and barrel racing will be events at each nights' rodeo. The contestants are professional and good at what they do.

"Really the only thing that has changed over the past 25 years is that the crowds have gotten bigger, and the cowboys have gotten better," Richter said.

Thursday night is Kids' Night. Anyone between the ages of 5 and 12 can get in for only $1 with a paid adult.

Each night, kids have the opportunity for some mutton bustin', where they can ride sheep like a bull. Thirty-five kids can participate at each rodeo. The only requirement is that they are under 60 pounds, and a parent is present to fill out paperwork. Mutton bustin' starts at 6:45 p.m.

"We are excited because this year we were able to team up with Lockwood Motors to be a Ram Rodeo. On Friday night, we have our 'Tough Enough to Wear Pink' night and Lockwood's 'Pink' Ram will be there for it," said Richter. "Also, if you wear pink, two dollars of each adult ticket will be donated to the American Cancer Society for Breast Cancer Awareness."

"This is such a great celebration," Richter added. "Each year people say they cannot believe such a small town can hold such a big celebration, but we do."
