A’s show off power against Castlewood

June 19, 2013
Marshall Independent

The Marshall A's wasted little time adjusting to amateur baseball across the border as the A's walloped the Castlewood (S.D.) Ravens 15-4 in seven innings Tuesday night in Castlewood.

Marshall swatted 20 hits, including home runs from Jason Minett and Zach Olson, while extending their winning streak to seven games.

The trip to Castlewood was a homecoming of sorts for A's catcher Tanner Neale, whose older brother Ryan started and took the loss for the Ravens.

"He was jacked up about it," A's manager Sean Culhane said of Neale. "It's a unique opportunity for him. It's a chance to play against big brother, a chance to hit against big brother. You kind of take a child like approach to it, since it's not something you get to do very often."

Neale had a double in the game, one of five for the A's. Minett, who hit a solo home run in the fifth inning, also added a double as part of a 2-for-4 night with four runs scored and an RBI. Five other Marshall batters were 2-for-4 on the night, including Taylor Rignell, who drove in three runs as well.

Jordan Kontz was 3-for-4 in the game, knocking in a pair of runs. Cody Curry paced the A's with a 5-for-5 performance, scoring twice with an RBI.

The A's led 3-0 before erupting for seven runs in the fourth inning off of Ryan Neale. Minett's solo shot was part of three-run sixth, while Zach Olson crushed a two-run homer in the three-run sixth.

"We had our regular lineup back together tonight," Culhane said. "When you get everyone back together and into the flow of the things, you have the ability to get some guys some good at-bats. We got a great outing out of Shoemaker, too. He gave us a chance to win it. We definitely took advantage of errors they had too."

Dylan Shoemaker grabbed the win for the A's, tossing seven innings. Shoemaker allowed four runs on six hits and a walk and struck out five on the night.

Castlewood committed four errors on the night, compared to just one for the A's.

Marshall, which improved to 9-1 with the win, will look to extend its winning streak to eight games tonight, as the A's return to the Corn Belt League for a road game at Sacred Heart.
