Mudcats drop sloppy game vs. Nisswa 8-6

June 24, 2013
Marshall Independent

Down two runs with the bases loaded and one out in the bottom of the seventh, the Marshall Mudcats were unable to get a hit when they needed to in an 8-6 loss to Nisswa Saturday on the third day of a Legion baseball tournament in St. Cloud.

The Mudcats had built a 4-3 lead through five innings, but a four-run sixth put Nisswa in control. Marshall responded with two runs in the sixth to cut the lead to one, but Nisswa added an insurance run in the top of the seventh and the Mudcats had no response as they capped the tournament with an 0-3 record.

Poor weather and poor field conditions limited Marshall to just one game Saturday. The Mudcats were also supposed to play Ely later in the evening.

The game Marshall got in was a sloppy one. The two teams combined to commit 10 errors, with Marshall accounting for four of them.

Adam Kovash got the start for the Mudcats and gave up three runs in the first inning followed by three scoreless innings. Leo Zerr came on in the fifth and tossed the final three innings, taking the loss.

Nolan Schaeffer led the Mudcats offensively, going 2-for-3 with a double. Bryce Johnson was 2-for-4, scoring a run and swiping two bases.
