After dropping their eighth consecutive game in an ugly opener of Thursday's doubleheader against Sioux Falls East (S.D.) in Sioux Falls, the Marshall Mudcats Legion baseball team got the monkey off their back in Game 2 and put one in the win column.
Despite scoring four runs in the first inning, the Mudcats lost to Sioux Falls East 12-4 in five innings in Game 1, but blasted 18 hits towards 16 runs in a 16-14 win in the nightcap.
The Mudcats mustered just four hits in the opening game and committed five erors to help Sioux Falls East score 12 runs over four innings. Conner Mesman, who started for Marshall, kept Sioux Falls off the board in the first but lasted just two more innings. Jared Holland entered in the fourth and finished off the game on the hill.
Marshall again started off the game with four first-inning runs in the second game of the twin bill. Sioux Falls East was able to match the Mudcats nearly run for run over the first three innings. After three complete, the Mudcats led 11-10.
Colton Peterson started for the Mudcats, walking seven in three innings of duty. Derek Buysse pitched the next two innings for Marshall, ultimately picking up the win. Adam Kovash retired the last six outs, and after giving up two runs in the bottom of the sixth recorded the save for Marshall.
Three Mudcats went 3-for-4 in the game, led by Buysse, who was a home run away from the cycle. Leo Zerr was one of the offensive trio for the Mudcats, scoring three times along with his 3-for-4 night at the plate. Bryce Johnson finished 3-for-4 as well, swiping two bases and scoring three runs of his own.
The Mudcats (3-9 overall) will look to build off their first win in over two weeks when they host Sioux Falls West on Tuesday at Legion Field.
