Big opening inning gives Cottonwood edge in 12-3 win against Sacred Heart

A big six-run first inning propelled the Cottonwood Legion baseball team to a 12-3 victory over Sacred Heart Monday in Cottonwood.

Cottonwood put up 12 hits in the game and had four players record a multi-hit game. Travis Varpness led the charge, going 3-for-5 at the plate. Jacob Rousch was 2-for-2 with two walks, and Wyatt Schuster and Bayley Enstad were each 2-for-4.

Randy Louwagie went the distance on the mound and earned the win. He struck out five batters, walked two and held Sacred heart to five hits.

Cottonwood (6-6 overall) is on the road in Prinsburg on Wednesday before coming home to face Minneota Saturday at noon.

Luverne VFW team topples Marshall Orange 18-3

The Luverne VFW baseball team was hot at the plate Monday in an 18-3 win over Marshall Orange in Luverne.

Luverne tagged Orange for 14 hits, including seven extra-base hits, in the victory. Andrew Verley and Jake Olson each had a double and a triple in the game.

Marshall was held to five hits in the game and scored all three of its runs in the fourth inning. Blaise Andries had a double for Marshall's lone extra-base hit.

Orange will try to respond today with a 7 p.m. game against Olivia at Legion Field.

Carlson leads Tracy VFW team past Tyler, 6-1

Taylor Carlson struck out nine batters and surrendered just two hits to lead the Tracy VFW baseball team to a 6-1 win over Tyler Monday in Tracy.

Tracy gave Carlson a nice cushion early on, scoring four runs in the first inning and one in the second for a quick 5-0 lead. Tyler scored its lone run in the fourth.

Gavin Van Moer was the top hitter for Tracy, going 2-for-2 at the plate. Derek Larson was 1-for-2.

Now 3-4 overall, Tracy returns to action next Monday with a game at Redwood Falls.
