MARSHALL - In its last time out on Legion Field on Sunday, the Marshall VFW Blue baseball team slogged through a mess of a game, committing eight errors in a 9-1 loss to Sioux Falls West (S.D.) in the championship game of the Marshall VFW tournament. With the day off on Monday, Blue returned to the diamond Tuesday looking refreshed both mentally and physically in a squeaky-clean 8-0 win over Olivia.

"The kids played well today," Blue head coach Chace Pollock said. "They came out and competed. After a weekend of games and a day off Monday, we were right back at it today and the kids played well."

Blue jumped out to an early 4-0 lead after the first inning, taking advantage of three walks by Olivia in the opening frame, a wild pitch and a Brad Bahlmann sacrifice fly.

Marshall Blue’s Dylan Criquet-Danielson fires a pitch during a VFW baseball game against Olivia Tuesday at Legion Field. He struck out seven batters in the winning effort.

With the early lead established, Marshall turned to pitcher Dylan Criquet-Danielson to bring home the win.

Criquet-Danielson kept Olivia off the scoreboard throughout the game and was perfect from the fourth inning on. He scattered four hits over the first three innings, while striking out seven and walking just one.

Marshall made no errors behind Criquet-Danielson, aiding in the shutout.

"Our pitchers realize that we have a pretty good defense. They realized that if they throw strikes and go after guys, there aren't too many teams that are going to be able to beat us," Pollock said. "Dylan did a great job of throwing strikes and realized that our defense would do the work for him. We had a good defensive effort all the way around. We didn't have any errors on the day and played well."

Blue added three insurance runs in the bottom of the fourth.

Bahlmann led off with a walk, stole second and then advanced to third on a single by Derek Rasmussen. Scott Buss later drove him in with a sacr fly. Conner Winkelman knocked in Rasmussen on a two-out single, while Nate Hoeft doubled in Winkelman from first in the next at-bat.

Marshall's final run, in the sixth, was the result of three straight two-out singles from Buss, Winkelman and Hoeft. The trio, batting ninth, first and second in Marshall's order combined for seven of Blues' nine hits. Buss was 2-for-2 with an RBI and a run, while Hoeft was 2-for-3 with two RBIs, a double and a run. Winkelman led the way with three singles in four at bats, scoring twice, driving in one run and stealing two bases.

"Those guys did a nice job of getting on base," Pollock said. "That's what they're there for, grind out some at-bats, see a lot out of the top of the order, a lot of pitches. They did a nice job."

Blue improves to 17-8 on the season after defeating Olivia, which featured players from the Class A state champion BOLD Warriors. Marshall will have almost 10 days off until its next game, as Blue takes part in the Alexandria tournament July 12-14 before opening up district playoffs the week after.
