With an 8-6 loss to Sacred Heart on Monday, Marshall VFW Orange saw its summer come to a close in the opening round of the District 3 playoffs.
Orange spotted Sacred Heart a 4-0 lead, but scored six runs on just two hits in the top of the third to jump in front 6-4. Sacred Heart answered with a pair of runs in both the fourth and sixth innings, however, ending Marshall's season in the process.
Blaise Andries started on the mound for Orange, lasting 3 1/3 innings. Mitchell Pauling relieved Andries and ultimately took the loss after giving up the deciding runs in the sixth inning.
Marshall mustered just five hits in the game, with Andries and Pauling contributing one each. Thomas Fischer had Orange's only multi-hit game, lacing two singles.
Orange coach Tanner Neale was making his head coaching debut at the VFW ranks this summer and said that the experience was enjoyable.
"This was my first year coaching 15-year-olds. It was a fun experience and I think the kids enjoyed it, too," Neale said. "It was fun coming to the field every day and watch them get better over the summer from where we started. I think they had fun doing it, too, seeing their game improve a little bit. There's no doubt we got better over the course of the summer."
Marshall's final record was 2-14, but Neale says that was not indicative of the quality his team showed throughout the summer.
"We were in a lot of the games, it's not like we were getting blown out every single game, and the guys knew that," Neale said. "They knew that one little mistake can cost them a game, and it did a handful of times throughout the summer. They understand the importance of every out."
