Musical history continues

Marshall Independent

To the editor:

The Marshall City Band, under the direction of Robert Meffert, finished another successful summer season on Wednesday, July 17. One hundred years ago, Marshall summer band concerts were also well attended.

The following comments appeared in the "Home Gossip" column of "The News-Messenger" on June 27, 1913:

"The Marshall Park Band is steadily improving under able direction and faithful practice. Their concerts have become a very enjoyable weekly feature and the crowded condition of the streets is evidence of the appreciation the citizens have for a band. The Marshall band is a permanent organization and no little credit is due the few who did the discouraging pushing, the hardest part of organizing a band. The concert next Wednesday evening will begin at 8 o'clock and last until 9, making the hour convenient for those from the country who wish to attend."
