Bruning homers, but Buttermakers fall 9-2

August 1, 2013
Marshall Independent

Nick Bruning belted a two-run home run to put the Hadley Buttermakers on top of the Fairmont Martins 2-0 in the first inning on Wednesday, but Hadley would produce little else in a 9-2 loss in Fairmont.

Martins' starter Shaun McGuire settled in after the long ball and threw eight consecutive scoreless innings, holding Hadley to just four hits on the night.

Nate Wieneke had a double for the Buttermakers, while Joe Larson was 2-for-3 with a run.

Fairmont led 4-2 entering the eighth inning where it erupted for five runs off the combination of Hadley starter Zach Bruns and Bruning. Bruns fanned three Martins, but allowed six runs while taking the loss.

Dustin Sobolik had a pair of doubles for Fairmont, which holds a 1-0 lead in the best of three series in the Region 13C playoffs. The series winner qualifies automatically for the state tournament.

Game 2 is scheduled for 2 p.m. Saturday in Hadley.
