A big late-inning comeback helped the Hadley Buttermakers force a decisive third game in a Region 13C playoff series against top seed Fairmont, but Hadley ran out of magic Sunday in a blowout loss.
The Buttermakers scored seven runs over the final two innings of a 9-8 win Saturday in Hadley. Fairmont returned the favor the next game, exploding for eight runs in the bottom of the sixth Sunday in a 15-3 win in seven innings in Fairmont.
In Game 2 Saturday, the Buttermakers scored five runs in the bottom of the eighth to tie Fairmont at 7-all. The Martins added a run in the top of the ninth, but Hadley struck for two runs in the bottom of the inning to get the walk-off win.
Matt Ackerman and Max Zwart led off the ninth with singles and Mitch Magnus got on base when Fairmont committed an error fielding his sacrifice bunt. After the next Hadley batter struck out, Trent Carlson drew a bases-loaded walk to tie the game and Chris Halbur followed with the game-winning base hit.
Ackerman, Nick Bruning, Zwart and Carlson each had two hits for Hadley, which had 12 total hits. Magnus and Carlson each had a double.
Hadley wasn't able to keep pace on Sunday. The Martins had three triples in the game on their way to the seven-inning blowout.
Joe Larson and Bruning each went 3-for-4 for Hadley in the loss. Halbur was 2-for-2 with two RBIs.
Fairmont advances to play a series with Luverne that will decided seeding in the state tournament. Hadley (21-14 overall) begins a three-game series against Wilmont Wednesday in Wilmont, with the winner of the series earning a spot at state.
