After suffering a bitter 5-4 loss in the opening game of the 2013 VFW state baseball tournament in Ely, Marshall VFW Blue bounced back and held on for a 10-8 win to keep its season alive on Thursday.
An errant throw on a sacrifice bunt cost Blue its tournament opener against Maple Grove. The two teams had battled back and forth on the day, with Marshall rallying from deficits of 2-1 and 4-3 in the game.
Three errors ultimately cost Blue, however, as Maple Grove scored three unearned runs in the game.
Nate Hoeft tossed five innings for Marshall, taking no-decision, while Drew Hmielewski was charged with the loss after allowing one earned run in 1-plus innings pitched.
Offensively, Brad Bahlmann provided the spark for Blue, belting two doubles as part of a 2-for-3 performance with two RBIs. Marshall scored its other two runs as a result of passed balls.
In its nightcap, Blue climbed out of an early hole to rein in a 10-8 victory against Ely.
Aaron Polejewski gave up three runs in 1 2/3 innings for Marshall, making way for Dylan Criquet-Danielson.
Criquet-Danielson ultimately picked up the win as Marshall outscored Ely 8-2 from the second through fifth innings. The Marshall reliever contributed with a 2-for-4 game at the plate, including a triple.
Hmielewski closed out the game on the mound for Blue, picking up the save and was 2-for-4 with an RBI double.
Bahlmann clubbed his third double of the day against Ely.
Marshall also collected eight stolen bases in the game, utilizing several delayed steals.
Blue faces another elimination game today as they face Perham at 9:30 a.m. in Soudan.
