Murray County wraps up local fair season

August 14, 2013
By Samantha Downing , Marshall Independent

Last but not least of the area county fairs takes place this weekend from today to Sunday in Murray County. Fair organizers intend to go out with a bang as they bring many new events to the fair this year.

"We will have Divas through the Decades at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday. They are singing songs from the '80s, and we are excited to have them," said Stan Larson, fair board president.

"Also on Thursday, Bill Bolin will be giving a historical presentation on the deadliest car crash from the '40s," Larson said.

Anita Gaul is scheduled to give another historical presentation on the fair's history on Friday.

"There are lots of new events this year, including the Raptor Center, featuring a bald eagle and other raptors. We will have a petting zoo, Boots and Britches and Janet Timmerman speaking on the draining of the Great Oasis Lake that was drained in the '30s," Larson said.

Boots and Britches is a group that travels in a 1923 camper and goes around singing and telling stories. It will be all over the fairgrounds Friday and Saturday.

"One event we are especially excited for is the rib cooking contest. We have had it for a couple years now, but this year we already have seven teams entered," Larson said.

There are events for kids, families and adults all weekend that are sure to keep everyone entertained.

"We hope to see everyone there," Larson said.
