Errors came back to bite the Milroy Yankees Sunday against the Lake Crystal Nine as the Yankees fell 3-2 in the opening round of the Class C state amateur baseball tournament at Irish Stadium in Maple Lake.
Milroy committed three errors and gave up two unearned runs in the one-run loss. A two-run sixth inning by the Yankees put them on top 2-1 before Nine responded with two in the bottom of the seventh to regain the lead.
Lake Crystal starting pitcher Mitch Kelly took it from there. He threw three shutout innings to close out the Yankees and cap a complete-game win. He finished with seven strikeouts while allowing six hits and four walks.
Nathan Deutz pitched six strong innings but took the loss for Milroy. He gave up three runs (one earned) on six hits with four strikeouts and two walks. Mahlon Zimmermann then shut Nine down over the next two innings to keep the Yankees in the game, but the offense was unable to produce any runs outside of the sixth inning.
Veteran catcher Justin Schlemmer was the lone Yankee to register a multi-hit game. He was 2-for-4 with an RBI. Second baseman Eric Dolan drove in the other run on a single.
Lake Crystal moves on to the second round to take on the Sartell Muskies at 11 a.m. Saturday at Municipal Stadium in Delano.
The Yankees, who won the Corn Belt League title, finish with a 21-7 overall record after their 28th appearance at the state tournament.
