While the temps are anything but cool these last few days, it's time once again to think about the weather that will be just around the corner. Summer turns into fall, fall turns into winter, and while there are probably quite a few hot days left for us, it is inevitable that cool weather will turn into downright cold weather in no time at all. It won't be long and a warm coat, mittens, scarves and boots will all be part of daily attire for most people; unfortunately, it won't be for everyone.
During the past few years, times are getting harder and harder for families in our region. For many, things like new coats, boots and gloves are done without so that a roof over their family's head and food on the family table can be secured. We all hope this is something that could never happen to us, but when it does, communities like ours are fortunate enough to have residents who are willing to not just lend a hand, but donate a warm coat, mittens, boots and snow pants for those who are most vulnerable. In fact, last year over 500 coats and winter gear were distributed to area families who faced the hard choice of having food and shelter or winter clothing.
Western Community Action is once again collecting winter apparel for local youths and families. We hope you will help make this winter warmer for people in need by donating new or gently-used winter items. Every year we especially need boots and snow pants for youths of all sizes. Beginning Sept. 23 and continuing through Nov. 1, donations will be accepted. If you have a donation of a winter coat, mittens, boots and snow pants please join us in making this winter a good winter for a local child by dropping your donation into a bright blue "Coats For Kids" barrel placed at businesses and organizations in Marshall and neighboring communities. Beginning the week after Nov. 1, we will distribute donations throughout the region.
