CANBY - MACCRAY proved that it had a little more experience than Canby during a Camden Conference volleyball match Friday night.

The Wolverines, led by seniors Brooklyn Gould, Aleah Schwitters and Molly Friese, defeated the Lancers in four games 26-24, 22-25, 25-16, 25-20.

Gould produced a match-high 17 kills on 40 of 43 hitting, added 16 digs and went 14 of 14 with a pair of aces at the serving line to spark MACCRAY, which improved to 2-0 overall. Schwitters set up 37 assists, made 14 digs and had an 8 of 8 serving effort with three aces. Friese served successfully 20 of 21 times with two aces and recorded 15 digs.

Canby’s Brook Bauman elevates for a block attempt against MACCRAY’s Kenidee Miller during a Camden Conference match in Canby on Friday night. MACCRAY?won 3-1.

"I think that we were evenly-balanced across the net," MACCRAY head coach Terese Bourne said. "Since we don't have a lot of height, we focus on being consistent in the front row."

In addition to Gould, the Wolverines combined for 29 more kills among five more players, including Kenidee Miller (eight), Ashley Dierksen (seven), Mallory VanKlompenburg (six), Emily Orwick (five) and Schwitters (three).

But the Lancers (0-2 overall), who feature a starting lineup of seniors Tara Kockelman, Ricki Kallhoff and Makayla VanDerostyne, are trying to find the right chemistry with eight-grader Abbey Peterson at setter, sophomore Brook Bauman at outside hitter, junior Alayna Pederson at middle hitter and junior Dani Kontz at libero.

"I learned that my team is inexperienced and it showed," Canby head coach Amy Wagner said. "We had a few leads that we let go, dug some holes that we were able to come back from, but we were just not able to close the door on the match."

Kallhoff (15), Bauman (12) and Pederson (11) each posted double digits in kills, while Kontz (20) and Kockelman (11) were Canby's dig leaders. Kallhoff stepped up to provide three blocks and 12 of 14 serving with two aces. Kontz (17 of 20, two aces) and Abbi Denekamp (15 of 15) were also effective at the serving line.

The Lancers held a 23-19 lead late in Game 1 before the Wolverines mounted a comeback. MACCRAY used a 7-1 run that was highlighted by kills from Gould (two), Dirksen (one), Schwitters (one) and three Canby unforced errors.

In Game 2, Canby rallied from a four-point (11-7) deficit to tie the set at 17 on an ace from Kallhoff. A pair of kills from Pederson allowed the Lancers to take cushions of 21-18 and 23-20 before Kallhoff's kill sealed the set victory.

"When we were running our system and able to pass, our middles played very well," Wagner said. "They terminated a lot of balls and did a good job."

MACCRAY dominated Game 3 by creating a pair of 10-point leads (21-11 and 24-14) on a block from Schwitters and a kill from Gould. Canby was deadlocked 2-2 early in the set by trailed the rest of the way.

The Lancers trailed 18-14 in Game 4, but received a block from Pederson, back-to-back kills from Kallhoff and Bauman and an ace from Kontz to knot the set at 18. The momentum turned on the next sideout, when Miller's block handed the Wolverines a one-point (19-18) lead that MACCRAY turned into a five-point set win.

The Wolverines, who combined for 57 digs, had their hands full with the Lancers.

"We focus a lot on defense, but we struggled with some of Canby's attackers," Bourne said. "In the end, we figured out our defense and that made the difference."
