Worthington slips past MHS kickers

September 4, 2013
Marshall Independent

The Marshall soccer team was unable to overcome several set plays from Worthington on Tuesday, falling to the Trojans 6-1 in Worthington.

"They scored four goals on some restarts and set pieces," said Marshall head coach Andrew Larson. "We weren't holding our marks all that well. We kind of got lazy."

The Tigers allowed Worthington to control the Southwest Conference match-up in the first half. The Trojans scored four goals, including a pair from corner kicks, before halftime.

"I think they kind of figured it out and got it in their heads that they had to hold their marks," Larson said. "They had to get their heads in the game during those set pieces and they played a lot better in the second half."

In the second half, after Worthington scored its fifth goal of the game, Marshall got its first goal of the year with a penalty kick from Samuel Duran in the 50th minute.

"We had a 2-on-1 breakaway and Sam got taken down in the box and got a penalty kick out of it," said Larson. "It was a nice shot. It was low and to the left corner."

Marshall goalie Jackson Luther stopped 21 of the 27 shots from Worthington in the loss.

The Tigers will play their home opener next Tuesday at Mattke Field at the Schwan Regional Event Center, when they play host to New Ulm.

"We're excited for that. This will be our first home game, and I really think that plays into our advantage," Larson said. "Playing at SMSU on the turf, not too man teams are used to that. That really is a home field advantage for us."
