Second victim in Granite Falls shooting dies

September 9, 2013
By Steve Browne , Marshall Independent

The Yellow Medicine County Sheriff's Office confirmed that the second victim in an early-morning shooting that occurred in Granite Falls on Sept. 2 has died.

Christopher Panitzke, 28, of Redwood Falls was found in the Granite Falls residence of Kara Ann Monson, 26, after a shooting was reported at 3:30 a.m. on Monday morning.

Monson was dead at the scene, while Panitzke was transported to Hennepin County Medical Center in Minneapolis. He was being treated for multiple gunshot wounds.

Granite Falls Mayor Dave Smiglewski said the news of Panitzke's death is another blow to everyone who knew one of both of the victims and to the towns they called home.

"It just drags everybody through the whole tragedy again, which is really too bad," Smiglewski said.

Authorities are still looking for Andrew Joseph Dikken, 28, of Granite Falls, in connection with the deaths. Dikken is described as 5 feet, 11 inches tall, weighing 160 pounds and has brown hair and brown eyes.

On Thursday, personnel from several law enforcement agencies searched a hotel in Glenwood after receiving a tip that someone who matched Dikken's description was there, but without result.

Chief Deputy Wayne A. DeBlieck of the Yellow Medicine County Sheriff's Office said Dikken is considered armed and dangerous.

DeBlieck asked that anyone with any information which might lead to Dikken's whereabouts call the police or 9-1-1 and cautioned not to approach him.

The funeral for Monson, who leaves behind a 4-year-old daughter, is scheduled for Tuesday at Granite Falls Lutheran Church.
