COLLEGE ROUNDUP: SMSU golfers sixth at Cobber

Mustangs top Lopers, improve to 2-0-0 overall

DETROIT?LAKES - The Southwest Minnesota State University women's golf team finished sixth among a field of 14 teams during the Cobber Open at Wildflower Golf Course on Friday.

The Mustangs completed the course in 325 strokes. North Dakota State used 292 shots to win the team title.

Abby Gruber led SMSU with a five-over 77. She tied for ninth in the individual standings.

Rachel Patnoe and Dana Wagner each carded 10-over 82s to end up in a 28th place tie.

Becky Koepp shot an 84 for the Mustangs to finish in a tie for 39th. SMSU's Marissa Campeau and Trisha Kienitz both turned in an 88 to place in a tie for 49th.

The Mustangs' Megan Will ended up in a 62nd-place tie after shooting a 92.

The top five scores count toward a team's total in strokes.

SMSU men run ninth at Augustana Twilight

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. - The Southwest Minnesota State University men's cross country team placed ninth during the Augustana Twilight Invitational at Yankton Trails on Friday.

SMSU compiled 225 points to end up ninth. Nebraska won the race with 31 points.

The Mustangs were paced by Alejandro Sanchez (20 minutes, 0.31 seconds) and Trent Smith (20:01.80), who finished 25th and 26th, respectively.

SMSU's Blake Wooten (20:18.25) crossed the finish line among the top 40 with a 38th-place effort. Teammate Jack Durham (20:47.06) came in 58th.

The rest of the Mustang runners included Schuyler Canfield (78th, 21:14.03), O.J. Ojullu (82nd, 21:18.21) and Kevin Leiferman (83rd, 21:18.59).

SMSU?women finish 14th at Augie Invite

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. - The Southwest Minnesota State University women's cross country team placed 14th during the Augustana Twilight Invitational at Yankton Trails on Friday.

The Mustangs piled up 406 points, while Augustana won the race with 34 points.

Amanda Grengs (18 minutes, 10.50 seconds, 40th) and Paige Yi (18:13.57, 42nd) were the only SMSU runners among the top 45 runners.

The Mustangs had three runners - Tatum Larson (19:48.42, 103rd), Julia Sauder (20:03.61, 106th) and Hannah Dressen (20:48.43, 115th) - within the top 120 competitors.

Caitlin Davis (22:43.79) placed 124th for SMSU.

Hayes lifts Mustangs to win over Lopers

KEARNEY, Neb. - Autumn Hayes scored on a penalty kick as Southwest Minnesota State University defeated Nebraska-Kearney 2-1 on Saturday.

Hayes scored her first goal this season by shooting the ball past Lopers goalie Katelin Mielke in the 64th minute.

Justine Hauck tallied her first goal in the 30th minute as the Mustangs grabbed a 1-0 lead. Hauck was assisted by Miranda Cadena.

Hauck took a pass from Cadena inside the box and scored from 5 yards out.

Nebraska-Kearney's McKinzie Rieber tied the match at 1 in the 51st minute after taking a shot from 8 yards out. She was assisted by Kirsti Rehler and Dalenie Phillips.

SMSU goalie Brienna Dehkes stopped of six shots taken by the Lopers. Mielke made three saves on five Mustang shots.
