SIOUX?FALLS, S.D - The Marshall Tiger volleyball team improved its season record to 9-1 after picking up a non-conference road win against Sioux Falls Roosevelt, S.D., Thursday.

The Class AA No. 1 Tigers swept the Rough Riders 32-30, 25-20, 25-19.

"That first set was pretty exciting," Marshall head coach Dan Westby said. "We had a 14-9 lead and they came back. Then the two teams just traded points back and forth. We were lucky to come out on top."

Though the next two sets were not quite as close, Sioux Falls Roosevelt still battled hard, Westby said. The Rough Riders are currently the top-ranked Class AA team in South Dakota.

"It was a good match,"Westby said. "They've got a lot of firepower at the net so it was good for our kids to have to deal with that."

While the Tigers felt like they were in control for most of the second set, Westby said the team fell behind 13-6 in the third set. Aggressive serving helped Marshall edge its way back into the match and eventually take the lead.

"Lexi Saugstand went on a long serving long in that third set," Westby said. "We tied it up and from there, took over the match. It's a tough match at their place. There was a big crowd and they're a good team."

Hannah Bennett had a strong performance in the back row, collecting 30 digs in the match for the Tigers. Kenzie Beekman added 16 digs, while Stephanie Baker had nine.

"Hannah really played well defensively," Westby said. "She finished with 30 digs, so she had a good night back there."

Beekman also led the offensive effort, hammering down 17 kills, while Sydney Griffin contributed 14 kills and 21 set assists. Rachel Sanow added 23 set assists.

Saugstad was 15-for-16 with an ace behind the serving line, while Beekman and Griffin both went 14-for-15 with two aces.

Marshall (9-1) is back in action Monday when they travel to Clara City to take on the MACCRAY Wolverines.
