The 36-hole tournament brought in 14 teams from four states including Minnesota, North Dakota, Iowa and Missouri.

The Mustangs finished the first round with 327 strokes Saturday, putting them in fourth place, going into Day 2.

On Sunday, the Minnesota State Mavericks won the team title with a combined score of 620. Second and third place was decided by a two-stroke battle. Concordia-St Paul (651) was the runner-up, two shots in front of the Mustangs, who had a team score of 653 strokes.

"It came down to a shot or two," said SMSU head coach Ross Webskowski. "?It would have been nice to get second, but this is definitely a good showing for us."

Marissa Campeau had the low total for the Mustangs, recording a 79 and an 82 for a total of 161. She tied for 14th place overall.

"I thought I played well, but I struggled my last seven holes," Campeau said. "But it was a good day with the wind."

SMSU's Abby Gruber tied for 22nd place with a score of 164, followed by teammate Dana Wagner who tied for 27th at 165. Rachel Patnoe had the top second round score for the Mustangs at 79, tying for 30th place with a combined score of 166.

The wind on Sunday posed a challenge for the golfers in the second round.

"The wind picked up on the back nine, which is where we finished," Webskowski said, "I think that affected our score."

Local athletes Olivia Bennett, of Marshall, and Briana Jenniges, of Wabasso, also participated in the Mustang Invitational.

Bennett, a senior at University of Minnesota-Morris, finished tied for 52nd with a score of 177.

Jenniges is a freshman at Bemidji State, where she has competed in two meets.

"It was good to be back," Jenniges said, "When I saw the corn fields I knew I was home."

Jenniges has golfed Marshall's course before in her section meet during high school.

"I felt like I had an advantage because I've golfed it," she said, "But the course is different every time you golf it."

She finished with 205 after two rounds, taking 79th place overall.

The Mustangs compete in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference meet at Brainerd on Oct. 5-6.
