Hendricks Clinic welcomes family practitioner from Poland

October 5, 2013
By Steve Browne , Marshall Independent

HENDRICKS?- There's a new doctor in town in Hendricks from farther away than most. Dr. Tomasz Lis is from Tuczemy, a small town in the south of Poland.

"I came here for the first time many years ago and took English classes at the University of Illinois in Chicago where my aunt lived," Lis said. "My aunt used to live in Chicago."

Lis received his medical degree from the medical school of the University of Warsaw and came to the U.S. again on a J1 academic visa to study cardiology at the University of Chicago.

While in Chicago, Lis started to look around for a place to settle.

"I was looking for an opportunity to practice in a small town, a place my wife would be happy," Lis said. "She's interested in dietetics, and the university in Brookings has a good program. We came here last year and visited the clinic here and decided this was the place."

Lis will be working in family practice at the clinic, in the emergency room and at the nursing home. His wife Olga, presently in Chicago, will be joining him in November after the birth of their first child.

Lis said he likes the opportunity to experience a wide variety of medical practice available in a small town and loves the fact that local people are very compassionate about care.

"I'd like to stay here. I'd like to raise my family here," Lis said.
