MANKATO - Sam Duran scored No. 10-seeded Marshall's only goal during a 3-1 loss to No. 7-seeded Mankato East in an MSHSL Class 2A Boys Soccer Section Tournament first round match Monday.
The Cougars built a 2-0 lead on the Tigers as Nathan Dreyer and Anjola Onadipe scored first-half goals for Mankato East, which improved to 8-6-3 overall.
"We talked before the game about not giving up early goals and (the Cougars) came out strong and had us behind from the beginning," MHS?head coach Andrew Larson said. " The most heartbreaking goals are in the first 5 minutes and last 5 minutes of a half and we allowed both types of goals."
Duran trimmed Marshall's deficit to 2-1 in the 66th minute by scoring on a penalty kick.
But Brandon Treinen's pass to Ben Schwartz resulted in the Cougars' third tally less than a minute later.
The Tigers end their season at 3-8-2 overall.
MHS won all three of its match during the second half of the 2013 season.
"The second half of the year, we played great soccer and competed with everyone. That was great to see," Larson said."
Mankato East advanced to play No. 2-seeded Willmar in the quarterfinal round Thursday.
