BURNSVILLE - Southwest Minnesota State University soccer player Miranda Cadena has been named Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference Offensive Player of the Week for her performance last weekend versus Bemidji State and Minnesota-Crookston.
The announcement came from the NSIC office on Monday.
Cadena and her first hat trick led No. 18 Southwest Minnesota State to an improbable comeback victory over Bemidji State on Saturday. She and the Mustangs found themselves down 3-0 with the game heading to the 57th minute.
In the 57th minute, SMSU scored off a free kick to make it 3-1 and, then, Cadena turned it on. She scored goals in the 62nd and 63rd minutes to erase the deficit and complete the comeback.
Cadena didn't stop there.
With the match looking like it was heading to overtime, Cadena took the ball away from the Beavers defense inside the penalty box before scoring on BSU goalie () after winning a 1-on-1 confrontation in the 89th minute.
who made the clutch play the Mustangs were looking for. In the 89th minute Cadena scored SMSU's fourth consecutive goal in the second half to lift the Mustangs to the unbelievable comeback.
The hat trick was the first at SMSU since Sept. 14, 2004.
Cadena now has scored nine goals in ten matches.
On Sunday versus Minnesota Crookston, Cadena didn't score but she still was a big part of the Mustangs' offense, recording assists on two of the three SMSU goals.
The sophomore forward finished the weekend with five shots on goal, two assists, three goals - including a match-winner - and eight points.
It is the first time Cadena, a Highland, Calif., native, has been named NSIC Player of the Week. She is the fourth Mustang to earn the honor.
Megan Kilroy, Brienna Dehkes and Danica Requejo have all been named NSIC Players of the Week this season.
Minnesota State's Molly McGough was named NSIC Goalkeeper of the Week and Winona State's Devon Richards grabbed NSIC Defensive Player of the Week.
No. 18 SMSU (10-0, 7-0 NSIC) returns home this weekend to play Upper Iowa on Saturday and Winona State on Sunday. Both matches are slated for 1 p.m.
