Psalm 118:24 reads, "this is the day that the Lord has made we will rejoice and be glad in it." It often seems that as we read or listen to the daily news that it is filled with doom and gloom. Violence streams from every corner, and the world is at odds with each other. Everyone faces financial concerns, losses of loved ones and friends, losses of jobs and multiple ongoing changes in their lives. It all can be overwhelming unless there is a balance found in life.
God created the beautiful earth for all of us to enjoy, and yet we often find ourselves enclosed in a cubicle or office at work then going home to deal with the needs of the household but not taking time to spend with God. We all need to be healthy in body, mind and spirit, and while we often take the time to work on our bodies with exercise and good eating habits, we often neglect the wellness of our spirits and our minds. Did you know that your mental and spiritual health can also affect your physical health?
Taking time to wash away the cares of the world by spending time in prayer and study of Scripture can bring life to your body and your mind. As the old saying goes, "you need to take time to stop and smell the roses." The mad rush, the over-scheduling of one's time and the focus on the negative aspects of the world leave little room to rejoice and be glad in each day. We all need to clear out little niches if not larger pieces of time in each day to nurture our spiritual and mental health.
I would encourage each of you to go for a walk and enjoy the fall breezes and all of God's creation. Set aside time to talk to God and study the Bible and focus on those things that bring joy rather than dwelling on the negatives. Philippians 4:8 tells us, "Finally, beloved, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is pleasing, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence and if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things."
For the health of your mind and spirit do a little self talk today and say, "this is the day that the Lord has made I will rejoice and be very glad in it!"
