PREP VOLLEYBALL: Southwestern United holds off DB to win Subway Classic

October 14, 2013
Marshall Independent

MARSHALL - Both sets were close, but Class A No. 13-ranked Southwestern United slipped past Dawson-Boyd 25-21, 25-22 during the Subway Classic's Gold Division championship match Saturday.

Playing at Southwest Minnesota State University's R/A Facility, the Wildcats improved to 23-4-1, while the Blackjacks dropped to 19-7.

"We have a tendency of starting off slow," said DB head coach Ashley Dahl, who watched the Blackjacks trail by double digits midway through the first set before making a furious comeback. "It was our third match of the day and I think being a little tired was a factor for us early-on."

The first set ended up being close. The second began with the teams trading points before SWU pulled away.

Southwestern United and Dawson-Boyd battled to an 11-all tie before the Wildcats made an 9-3 run to take a 20-14 lead. Kills from Rachel Mathias, Andrea Hinkeldey and Courtney Place sparked SWU's uprising.

But the Blackjacks rallied behind Katarina Kuhlmann and Kelly Husby, who each had a kill as Dawson-Boyd scored the next three points to trim its deficit to 20-17.

"Our strategy was to serve aggressively against Southwestern United," Dahl said. "They have a few great hitters and we tired to get them out of their system. That seemed to work for us."

Moments later, Andrea Lee's kill kept the Blackjacks within three points (22-19) before a Wildcats' violation for a double-hit brought Dawson-Boyd one point closer.

It became 23-21 on a block by Husby, which led to Southwestern United asking for a timeout.

When play resumed, the Wildcats worked the ball to place, who finished the match with the final two kills.

APPLE VALLEY OCTOBER CLASSIC

APPLE VALLEY - Class A No. 1-ranked Minneota took its lumps during the Apple Valley October Classic on Saturday.

The Vikings (23-3 overall), who went 2-2 during the weekend tournament to finish sixth, dropped more matches in two days (two losses) than they had all season.

But with the level of competition being raised up one class against Hibbing and two classes versus the rest of Minneota's tournament opponents, the Vikings learned some valuable lessons in defeat.

"We were right in all of these matches, but we found some things that we need to fix" Minneota head coach Steph Hennen said. "That's good because that is what these in-season tournaments are used for."

On Friday, Minneota split its pair of matches by defeating Winona (20-25, 25-11, 15-0) and losing to Chanhassen (25-20, 18-25, 8-15). On Saturday, the Vikings split again - this time defeating Hibbing (25-20, 25-13) and losing to Burnsville (26-28, 25-8, 14-16).
