Short takes for Oct. 25

October 25, 2013
Marshall Independent

Strike up the band

THUMBS UP: Well done, Marshall High School marching band, at this years Bands of America Super Regional Championships. Marshall placed second in Class A at the annual event in Missouri that draws top marching bands from around a specific region. All members who make up the squad put in plenty of hours on the practice field (or parking lot) and should be commended for representing the city of Marshall on a major stage.

Handling of sexual misconduct in the church

THUMBS DOWN: Archbishop John Nienstedt admitted Thursday the Archdiocese of St. Paul and Minneapolis poorly handled allegations of clergy sexual misconduct in the last decade and apologized to victims in the archdiocese's official newspaper. This issue has made plenty of headlines in the last couple of weeks, and it was reported Thursday the Archdiocese spent almost $11 million to cover costs associated with sexual abuse and other misconduct by priests who were removed from active ministry. Nienstedt has denied any cover-up of abuse and maintains there are no offending priests in active ministry. We sincerely hope the Archdiocese continues to be active in working to improve this situation and, for the sake of the public, do more to vet and monitor clergy members in the future; transparency is also a must for everyone involved.

High school sports scene at its finest

THUMBS UP: What a fun time of year it is: Cross country runners pushing themselves to advance to state, and football and volleyball teams competing in high-stakes section games, trying to keep their seasons going to reach their ultimate goal of a state championship. We wish all our local athletes and teams the very best of luck this weekend and the rest of the 2013 season.
